In a Manner of Speaking: How Understanding Culture Impacts Your Language StudiesWhat Does Language Have to Do with Culture?To answer that question, lets think about the purpose of language.Simply put, language allows us to express our thoughts and feelings, it allows us to communicate and share knowledge with one another.You wont fully master a language unless you understand the culture, just like youll never fully understand a culture until youve immersed yourself in a study of their language.This is because language is constantly in flux and largely dependent on the ever-evolving views, values and customs of its speakers.Lets look at just how connected they really are.Language reflects the values and beliefs of a cultureThe differences between two cultures are reflected perfectly in their languages. Mastering the nuances of a language means really being able to understan d people who (more than likely) grew up with an entirely different set of values and beliefs. You have to open yourself up to these differences.Those contrasting values and beliefs can manifest in a variety of ways. Taking a look at common expressions and idioms gives you a glimpse into what a society deems important.For example, just looking at all the  Chinese idioms dealing with family  demonstrates the value they place on this relationship and tells us a little about the family construct and potential dynamics.Or if you were learning English, you can find lots of examples of the historical and cultural values reflected in typical English expressions and idioms by just listening to an episode of NPRs radio program  A Way with Words.Have you ever heard the phrase A Whistle in the Dark or noticed any of the other words and expressions for the word courage? Such observations would lead an English learner to believe that bravery is an attribute thats highly coveted in English-speakin g societies.But thats not the only connection between language and culture.Language reflects our perception of the worldLanguage affects the way we perceive the world and therefore, it affects how we choose to interact with it.There have been several studies on this.Ask a linguist about language and perception and theyll probably point you to the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, which states that the limits and structure of language determines their users thoughts and actions. Its a hypothesis supported by professor Lera Boroditsky who wrote a whole paper on the topic of linguistic relativity.A great example explored by those who study linguistic relativity is the concept of time and space between languages. Boroditsky conducted an experiment in which she found that while English speakers view time horizontally (i.e., the past is behind us or to the left and the future is ahead or to the right), Mandarin speakers are more likely to view time vertically (i.e. the order of events is viewed fro m top to bottom).Others have studied the connection between  bilingualism and personality, finding that when people switch languages they also seem to switch their personality to fit the language. That is, they seem to shift their way of thinking to reflect that of the people who speak the respective language. Its fascinating!Language reflects perception, but it also reflects the history of a culture and explains why certain ideas and beliefs are so prominent and profound.Historical Perspective: The Link Between the History of a Culture and Its LanguageTake terms that have lasted from ancient times to modernity to heartWhen you look at any culture, you cannot rightly ignore its history. Understanding its history allows you to form some idea of how and why certain words came to mean what they do. For example, in Mandarin, ?  (Xin)  is often directly translated to heart in English. However, the word also refers to the mind and ones emotions.The meaning of the word is an important conc ept in Daoist teachings and makes those teachings much more accessible to Mandarin speakers (which may explain why it has thrived since ancient times).The effects of these ancient beliefs on modern Chinese values and culture  are still present today. Clearly, the deep-rooted meaning of the term  Xin  is something a Mandarin learner would want to take to heart if they truly wanted to understand the implications behind the word.The history of a culture explains the power a term or idea can carry in a language, but it also explains the existence of certain (sometimes seemingly random) linguistic elements.To really understand, you also have to ask yourself about the influence of other cultures on a language.Watch out for footprints left by other cultures on a languageThe English language is a perfect example of mixing cultures and language. The broadening or dissolution of their original meanings tended to just happen slowly over time with usage. Thanks to the internet, we can study this much more closely.Words can evolve in various ways. Sometimes they can start out as harmless phrases but evolve to be quite rude, like the word bimbo which has its roots in the Italian word  bambino (little child). In English, this was a term originally referring to an unintelligent man, but over time it came to be quite a derogatory term for an attractive, but not very bright, woman.Then lets take a look at the word  awesome, which nowadays is used to describe the best things ever (like this trivia filled article)! The root of the word is awe which used to be synonymous with dread. This a core fact that many people simply don’t realize, even if they have no intention of “being in charge”. What are the Leadership skills I’m talking about? I’m going to list the Leadership skills I outline in the Leadership training I do but I’m only going to discuss a few of them because I think they are the most important ones.   That doesn’t mean you get a pass on the others but I think it’s good to know where to start focusing your skill building. Leadership Skills Positive Committed to a result Influential (social) Takes responsibility Shows Initiative Deliberately gets Involved See’s what possible â€" thinks about Improvement Has a vision Communicates Relationship developer; reads people Motivates by engaging Takes responsibility â€" A person that is being responsible for things in the workplace is first and foremost accountable for their own work and results.   They will also expand to become responsible for the work and actions of others as they step up and seek to lead work efforts or projects.   Taking responsibility for your own results is huge because a lot of people look for reasons why they didn’t do something well rather than doing what it takes to ensure a great outcome.   Anyone who can’t be accountable for the outcome of his or her own work will never go anywhere professionally.   They let situations occur that turn them into victims rather than do everything they can.   The same mentality exists by being accountable for the work of others. Shows Initiative â€" This is defined as: An individuals action that begins a process, often done without direct managerial influence. Notice the key words here and that is “without direct managerial influence”.   In other words, you don’t need the boss to be telling you what to do all the time.   They also don’t want to be directing all the time anyway as they have other things that will make better use of their time.   Think of it like this: The CEO of your company isn’t waiting to be told what to do.   When a person takes initiative in the workplace I can promise you that almost no one does this and it will make you an easy, positive standout. Deliberately gets involved â€" Employees that step up to solve problems or take ownership of projects are signs of leadership.   Again, it’s fairly rare to see so it scores high in the hearts of minds of decision makers. Communicates â€" Communication is the weak spot in almost all groups and for most people.   Communicating is one of the easiest of all of these skills to do.   Decision makers love a free flow of information about work, business and projects rather than trying to extract it from the people who are doing the work but its how the majority of people operate.   If you communicate consistently and proactively you will be uppermost in the hearts and minds of management. What is it Like to Attend Nevada State College Cynthia is a current student atNevada State College. She is majoring in nursing, and specializes in anatomy tutoring, elementary math tutoring, and a number of other subjects. Below, she shares her experience at Nevada State College: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Cynthia: While Nevada State College is a little over 10 years old, its growing and expanding like crazy. The campus is set in the rural area of Henderson, NV. The location can be a bit out of the way for some, but there is a bus line that one can catch to get to school. I feel really safe on campus; we have the police officers from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas constantly on campus. The campus is small enough to get to know everyone, but large enough that you don't feel smothered. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Cynthia: The faculty members are all awesome. You can always come and talk to the professors and make an appointment to meet with an adviser; they even have open hours for walk-ins. I love that the classes are now beginning to have course assistants along with SI (supplemental instruction). This helps with any questions you may have with the classes. The SI sessions really help, especially with tough classes, such as pharmacology. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Cynthia: While the campus is still small and there are no dorms as of yet, there is still a big opportunity to socialize and meet other students. With the recent addition of two new buildings, we now have a small food court area that has great food, as well as a Starbucks. The school is always having some sort of activity going on, and there are clubs that one may join if interested. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Cynthia: Nevada State College is known for its BSN nursing program, as well as other majors, such as education, science, and psychology. I chose to go toNSC for the nursing program, and just finished my first semester as a nursing student. I feel that this college is great at supporting the nursing program. The school provides you with the tools and resources needed to accomplish your educational needs. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Cynthia: It was very easy for me to make friends, as the classes are not very large and everyone is really nice. There is no Greek life currently at NSC; however, I have seen students petitioning to bring Greek life to NSC. I like that NSC is very open to all people and organizations they feel will help the diversity of the school. How helpful is the Career Center and other student support services? Cynthia: I have seen many graduates out in the workforce, especially when doing my clinicals for class. Employers and past graduates have nothing but praise when they hear of people coming out of our college. There are many services available to students on campus. The great thing is, if its not available on campus, NSC students have the opportunity to use the resources at UNLV. How are the various study areas such as libraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Cynthia: The library is great. There is plenty of room to study, as well as rooms that can be checked out for times when you need to study with a group. The library does not have books; however, you have many resources onlineover 1 million books. If you really need to see the book in print or if its not available online, the librarians will find a way to get it for you to borrow. Describe the surrounding town. Cynthia: The surrounding town of Henderson is nice. There is everything you could need from a small town, and its right next door toLas Vegas. There is always something to dofrom museums, to water parks, to riding a roller coaster, or seeing a show. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Cynthia: The student body is growing each semester, and I am very pleased with the class sizes. The classes are not too large; they are just the right size so you can know everyone, and the professors can manage the class well. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one you regret the most. Cynthia: One of my most memorable times was after a week of studying for finals. I was walking out of math class, and to my surprise, the school had provided pizza, chicken wings, salads, and drinks, as a way of letting us know that we are supported and that we work hard. Another memorable occurrence was in one of my nursing classes. The professor always played relaxing music for the first 10 minutes of class, just to get everyone relaxed and calm before we learn.
